女主人公阿尔文太太婚后生活很不幸，由于丈夫行为放荡，荒淫无耻，她无法忍受，于是便离开了家去找她从前喜欢过的曼德牧师，一位传授她理想主义的老师倾诉衷情，她很想离开丈夫出走，没想到这位牧师道貌岸然地劝她死守“妇道”，逆来顺受，她到底没有走娜拉的道路，死守着自己所不爱的丈夫过日子。丈夫死了，她又把希望寄托在儿子欧士华身上。同样没想到的是欧士华不仅继承了父亲的恶习，而且染上了父亲遗传下来的病毒，无法医治，终于成了白痴，这对阿尔文太太在心灵上构成致命的打击，她最终做了旧礼教的殉道者和淫乱社会的牺牲品。...
